When the ISO/PC 278 working group was assigned the task of developing the “Anti-Bribery Management Systems Standard,” or what would become ISO 37001, they had three objectives in mind:

  • To provide Compliance Officers with a manual to assist them in developing an anti-bribery management system (ABMS). This is why the Standard includes a lengthy annex devoted to best practises.
  • To provide Compliance Officers with a globally recognised standard against which to benchmark their existing ABMS. This explains why the standard is so exhaustive.
  • To provide the international community with a verifiable standard for preventing corruption. This is why ISO 37001 was developed as a certifiable standard rather than a collection of guidelines.
